Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign 20-year-old Denmark international Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in a record-breaking transfer worth around €35 million, including add-ons.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reported a medical has been booked for Dorgu for Thursday, ahead of Manchester United’s final Europa League league phase fixture.
Reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport indicate that Dorgu and his family were already preparing for the move to Manchester, with Napoli and Juventus also previously linked.
The deal surpasses Lecce’s previous record sale, the €19.5 million transfer of Morten Hjulmand to Sporting CP in 2023.
Dorgu’s career so far
Born in Copenhagen to Nigerian parents, Dorgu represented Denmark at all youth levels before making his senior debut in 2024. He started his career at Nordsjælland before joining Lecce in 2022, where he has since made 53 Serie A appearances.
This season, he has played 21 league games, scoring three goals and providing one assist.
Dorgu earned his first senior call-up for Denmark in September 2024. He made substitute appearances in Nations League victories over Switzerland and Serbia, scoring against the former.
Where will Dorgu fit at United?
Initially a left-back, Dorgu has showcased his versatility this season, playing as a right winger and across multiple positions on the left flank. His adaptability makes him an ideal fit for new United manager Ruben Amorim, who favours a 3-4-2-1 system.
With Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia struggling with injuries, United have relied on Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui as emergency left-wing-backs.
Dorgu is expected to fill that void while also providing an option on the right if needed.
