Australia’s all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has made a stunning announcement, revealing his immediate retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket.
The decision comes as a surprise, with Stoinis bowing out of the format just before Australia’s participation in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Stoinis scored 1495 runs in 71 matches, averaging 26.69, with a standout performance of 146 not out against New Zealand in Auckland in 2017. He also claimed 48 wickets at an average of 43.12.
Stoinis was a key member of Australia’s squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup, playing a crucial role in their recovery after a challenging start to the tournament. His vital contributions, particularly with the ball against Pakistan, were integral to Australia’s eventual triumph as World Cup champions.
In a heartfelt statement, Stoinis expressed his gratitude for representing his country on the international stage. “Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish.”
The 34-year-old all-rounder, known for his powerful batting and handy medium-fast bowling, reflected on his decision, admitting it wasn’t easy but felt it was the right moment to step away from the format.
“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career,” Stoinis said.
Despite the sudden change, Stoinis expressed his appreciation for his relationship with Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, and his ongoing support. “I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support,” Stoinis added.
Although Stoinis will not be playing in the ICC Champions Trophy, he made it clear he would continue to support his teammates from the sidelines, stating, “I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan.”
Australia is set to make several changes to their squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy, with the final team confirmation expected after the second Test against Sri Lanka.
Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out due to a back injury, while captain Pat Cummins is also unlikely to be included in the squad. Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is also expected to miss the tournament, further impacting Australia’s options ahead of the prestigious event.
